Concordia University Bike Patrol Unit

The Concordia Security Deparment began experimenting with a bicycle patrol in June of 1996. Lt. Darren Dumoulin began by using his own equipment and soon realized the benefits of patrolling on a bicycle. In May 1997 two Officers sucessfully completed a four day I.P.M.B.A. training course with the Montreal Police Force, officially forming the Concordia Security Bicycle Patrol Unit.

Being very mobile on campus and it's surroundings, the officers respond to calls quicker and cover 4 to 6 times more ground than a foot patrol officer. The unit routinely patrols the streets, alleys, indoor and outdoor parking lots surrounding the campus. The increased security visibility around campus, improves crime prevention efforts and increases contact with the comunity. An officer responding to an incident on bike has an advantage of not being seen or heard until the last second, increasing his chances of apprehending the suspect.

Three Officers patrol on a Cannondale FS 7P Police issue bicycle. The unit operates 24 hours a day, weather permitting, from early April to late October.
